COURSE CURRICULUM

The bachelor’s program in English at Leiden University is designed to provide students with advanced language skills, a deep understanding of literature, and the ability to analyse the English language in its historical and cultural contexts. In the first year, students focus on developing core English language competencies, including writing, listening, pronunciation, and the study of phonetics, syntax, and word and sentence structures. They are also introduced to Old and Middle English, gaining insight into the historical development of the language. Alongside language study, students take an introductory course in Literary Studies and begin exploring English literature, while building essential academic skills such as researching, critically evaluating information, and presenting findings effectively.In the second and third years, students further develop their language abilities and academic skills, including essay writing, research methods, and presentation techniques. The program allows for personalisation through electives, enabling students to specialise in one or more of four core themes: language, literature, linguistics, and philology. Students also have the opportunity to pursue a minor or internship, gaining practical experience or broadening their knowledge in complementary fields. This flexibility ensures that students can align their studies with personal interests and career goals, whether in academia, cultural institutions, or professional practice.The third year concludes with the bachelor’s thesis, which allows students to conduct independent research on a topic of their choice. This final project integrates the skills and knowledge acquired throughout the program, requiring students to gather and critically analyse information, and to present their findings clearly in both written and oral forms. By combining rigorous language training, literary and linguistic study, and research experience, the program equips graduates with the analytical, communication, and intercultural skills needed for careers in education, research, publishing, translation, and other fields where advanced English proficiency and cultural insight are essential.
