COURSE CURRICULUM

The bachelor’s program in Dutch Studies at Leiden University is designed for international students who wish to achieve fluency in Dutch while developing an academic-level understanding of the Netherlands’ culture, history, and society. The program is flexible, offering different entry points depending on prior knowledge of the Dutch language. Beginners can follow program A, which starts from zero knowledge of Dutch, while those with intermediate or advanced skills may begin with an accelerated route, potentially completing the program in two years. Leiden also offers the first year as a one-year stand-alone program in Dutch Studies, making it accessible for a wide range of learners.The first year is heavily determined by the student’s language level. For those starting as beginners, the focus is on intensive language acquisition, with courses in speaking, writing, and understanding Dutch. Alongside this, students attend lectures on Dutch culture and society, gaining insight into both the historical influence of the Netherlands and its present-day dynamics. Academic skills such as research, writing, and presentation are also developed during this year, preparing students for independent study. Students with a more advanced command of Dutch take higher-level courses and progress more quickly into cultural and historical studies.By the second year, students achieve near fluency, allowing them to explore the nuances of the language in greater depth. Courses in Dutch history, literature, and linguistics are introduced, with a strong emphasis on conducting independent academic research. Studying in Leiden, surrounded by Dutch in everyday life, offers an immersive environment that accelerates fluency and cultural understanding.The third year provides flexibility for students to tailor the program to their interests and future goals. Elective courses or a minor in another Leiden program allow them to broaden or deepen their studies. The program concludes with a bachelor’s thesis written in Dutch, where students apply their knowledge to an independent research project. Topics may range from literature and linguistics to cultural or historical studies, reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of the program. This combination of language mastery and cultural expertise prepares graduates for careers in research, translation, international relations, or cultural exchange, as well as further academic study.
