COURSE CURRICULUM

The Archaeology bachelor’s program at Leiden University is designed to give students a comprehensive introduction to the field, combining theory, practice, and research. In the first year, students are introduced to the fundamental skills and concepts every archaeologist needs. They learn about the development of archaeology as a science, explore important archaeological theories, and gain familiarity with Leiden’s different research areas. The year combines lectures in the mornings with tutorials and practical sessions in the afternoons, and includes participation in real fieldwork, where students experience firsthand what excavations involve. Students also study heritage policies and learn how to communicate archaeological findings to a broader audience. The study load averages about 40 hours per week, consisting of lectures, tutorials, fieldwork, excursions, exams, and independent study. Instruction takes place in either Dutch or English in the first year, while the second and third years are taught in English. Teaching methods include lectures, seminars, and tutorials, with students expected to actively contribute through assignments, presentations, and papers. Each subject completed earns credits, with one year equalling 60 credits. To support students, a mentor system is in place, ensuring regular guidance, and a Binding Study Advice requires students to obtain at least 45 credits in the first year to continue. From the second year, students begin to shape their own path, taking required courses on themes such as humanity’s deep history, urban societies, and globalisation in the past. They then specialise further by choosing tutorials aligned with their interests, ending the year with fieldwork in faculty research projects. The third year offers greater flexibility: students can pursue a minor, study abroad, or take electives. An internship is compulsory, providing professional experience in settings such as museums, government agencies, or archaeological field projects. The final semester combines remaining coursework with a bachelor’s thesis, where students conduct independent research and refine their analytical and writing skills, preparing them for both professional careers and further academic study.
