COURSE CURRICULUM

The African Studies bachelor’s program offers students the opportunity to engage deeply with Africa’s history, cultures, and languages, while also exploring broader areas such as economics, politics, and international relations. This multidimensional approach allows students to gain a holistic understanding of the continent and to critically reflect on both internal and external perspectives. The structure of the program is designed to gradually build expertise, beginning with a broad foundation and leading to greater specialisation as students progress through the three years of study. In the first year, students are introduced to the main themes of the program through a broad and interdisciplinary approach, while also beginning their study of Swahili, one of Africa’s major languages. This year establishes the groundwork for further exploration by providing insights into Africa’s diversity and complexity. The second year allows students to tailor their education to their personal interests by choosing among disciplines such as African History, Anthropology, Linguistics, or Literature and Arts. A highlight of this stage is the semester abroad in an African country, where students not only immerse themselves in African academic life but also enhance their language skills and gain valuable personal experiences that deepen their understanding of the continent.By the third year, students enjoy significant flexibility, with half of the year devoted to electives. They may pursue a minor in another faculty, complete an internship, or study abroad again. Alternatively, they can design a personalised package of electives to align with their career goals. The final semester is dedicated to writing a bachelor’s thesis, an essential capstone project that challenges students to independently conduct research, critically analyse information, and present their findings effectively both in writing and orally. Overall, the program equips graduates with strong academic, analytical, and intercultural skills, preparing them for further studies or professional paths connected to Africa and the wider world.
