COURSE CURRICULUM

The Urban Housing and Land Justice program is a specialised master track within the MSc in Urban Management and Development that equips students to critically analyse, understand, and address issues of equity in access to land, housing, and urban services. This program is designed for students who are passionate about promoting social justice and sustainability in urban environments, and it combines rigorous academic theory with practical learning methods, including lectures, participatory discussions, educational games, workshops, excursions, and group exercises. Students are exposed to a wide range of perspectives, such as socio-political, socio-legal, economic, environmental, and governance dimensions of land and housing, ensuring a holistic understanding of the challenges and opportunities in achieving equitable access.The program offers two main focus areas: Land and Housing. In the Land focus, students examine the social, economic, and environmental factors that lead to inefficiencies in land development, unequal access to property markets, and inequitable distribution of resources and benefits. They learn to apply land value capture principles and other instruments to promote sustainable, inclusive development that addresses inequalities and maximises social and environmental returns. The Housing focus centres on the practical application of the 5As principles of adequate housing, exploring alternative approaches such as community-led housing, (aided) self-help housing, and incremental housing. A significant component of this focus is the consideration of gender implications, helping students understand how housing policies and interventions affect different populations and contribute to broader social equity.Throughout the program, students develop analytical, research, and practical skills that prepare them to tackle real-world urban challenges. They are trained to critically evaluate policies, design innovative interventions, and engage with complex socio-political systems, making them well-prepared for careers in urban planning, public policy, international development, NGOs, or research. By combining theoretical insights with applied learning, the Urban Housing and Land Justice program nurtures the next generation of professionals capable of fostering equitable, sustainable, and inclusive urban futures.
