COURSE CURRICULUM

The master’s program in Humanitarian Action and Crisis Governance is designed for students who want to understand and address crises at multiple societal levels. It adopts a systems approach, analysing how governmental, local, international, and non-governmental actors respond to disasters, conflicts, and humanitarian challenges. The curriculum combines theoretical insights with practical experience, guided by academics who have worked in the field, providing students with the skills needed for effective crisis management, humanitarian action, and public policy in complex contexts.Students benefit from close links with organisations in The Hague and Rotterdam, including those focused on peace, justice, disaster response, and humanitarian work. Through case studies, workshops, simulations, and research projects, participants develop expertise in analysing societal crises, designing interventions, and evaluating their effectiveness in diverse cultural and political settings.Graduates are well-prepared for careers in international organisations such as the United Nations, the European Union, or the Red Cross, as well as in global and local NGOs, government agencies, crisis management units, and think tanks. Opportunities also exist in consultancy, research, and private-sector roles related to disaster risk reduction, conflict resolution, and sustainable development. This program equips students to contribute meaningfully to emergency relief, post-crisis reconstruction, and the formulation of humanitarian policy, making a tangible impact where it is needed most.
