COURSE CURRICULUM
The Behavioural Economics curriculum is carefully structured to balance theory, application, and research training, ensuring that students graduate with both strong analytical foundations and hands-on experience. The coursework is divided into three main components: 50% behavioural economics courses (22 ECTS), 32% courses from a chosen track (14 ECTS), and 18% empirical methods. Across all courses, the balance between learning theory and applying it in practice is approximately 40% and 60% respectively, giving students frequent opportunities to connect concepts with real-world challenges. In class, the emphasis is on active engagement and problem-solving. For example, in the Seminar Applied Behavioural Economics, students have worked on a project with a major Dutch life insurance, pensions, and asset management company. The challenge involved finding a way to better assess individual clients’ risk attitudes to optimise pension capital allocation. Since many clients were unwilling to complete lengthy surveys, students used insights from economics, psychology, and experimental methods to design practical improvements to the company’s questionnaire. This type of applied case illustrates how the program prepares students to address complex problems by bridging behavioural insights with economic decision-making.The study schedule includes a well-rounded set of courses and seminars. It begins with the Take-Off Master, followed by technical courses such as Applied Microeconometrics and Advanced Behavioural Economics. Depending on their interests, students then pursue one of the available tracks—Financial Economics, Strategy Economics, or Marketing—before continuing with courses such as Experimental Economics and Advanced Empirical Methods. The Seminar Applied Behavioural Economics provides a setting for applying theories to practical problems, and the program concludes with the Master’s Thesis in Behavioural Economics. This structure ensures that graduates are skilled in empirical analysis, grounded in behavioural and mainstream economics, and capable of applying their knowledge to pressing issues in policy, finance, business, and beyond.
