COURSE CURRICULUM
The Global History and International Relations master’s specialisation offers a comprehensive and comparative study of historical processes from the early modern period to the present. Students learn to analyse historical events through an interdisciplinary lens, drawing on insights from social sciences, international political theory, and cultural analysis. The program provides the skills to describe both broad historical trends and the unique aspects of specific events, with a focus on topics such as international relations, migration, trade, and cultural heritage. Emphasis is placed on understanding the past to better interpret contemporary developments. Students gain hands-on experience with diverse research sources, including paper archives, digital databases, oral histories, and political documents, developing the methodological expertise necessary for rigorous historical research. The curriculum is structured over four terms. In the first term, courses such as The Origins of Global Order, Historical Culture in a Globalising World, and Digital Tools for the Future provide foundational knowledge and practical skills for analysing historical sources. The second term focuses on Global Order in the Postcolonial World, International Relations Theory, and a Research Workshop that allows students to begin applying their research skills in a guided setting. In the third term, students choose electives like Global Environmental Politics or a short internship, continuing with the Research Workshop while beginning their Master Thesis research. The fourth term concludes with courses on Globalisation and the Making of Europe, 1850-present, and the completion of the Master Thesis.Through this program, students develop the ability to critically assess historical evidence, understand global processes, and apply interdisciplinary perspectives to both past and present issues. Graduates are prepared for careers in research, international organisations, cultural heritage institutions, public policy, and other roles requiring deep historical insight combined with analytical and research expertise.
