COURSE CURRICULUM

The study schedule for the master specialisation Arts, Culture and Society is structured to combine thematic seminars, research training, electives, and the master thesis over four terms. In Term 1, students take three core thematic seminars: Advanced Sociology of Arts and Culture, Critical Heritage Studies, and Applied Methods in Arts & Culture Research. These courses provide foundational knowledge and methodological skills essential for analysing the cultural sector. Term 1 also includes the Master Thesis Class, which introduces students to thesis planning and research design.In Term 2, students continue with the Master Thesis Class while selecting two research seminars (5 EC each) from a range of offered options. This term allows students to deepen their research skills and apply theoretical frameworks to specific cultural and societal contexts. Additionally, students choose one thematic seminar from a set of options, further tailoring their academic focus.Term 3 focuses on elective coursework and the start of the Master Thesis. Students select one elective seminar (5 EC) from a list of seven, enabling them to pursue specialized interests within the field of arts, culture, and society. This term provides practical experience in research and analysis, helping to bridge academic learning with independent work on the thesis project.Term 4 is dedicated entirely to completing the Master Thesis, allowing students to synthesise their learning, conduct independent research, and produce a substantial piece of scholarly work. Throughout the program, students are encouraged to critically engage with cultural theory, apply sociological and heritage-focused perspectives, and develop research and analytical skills necessary for careers in cultural organisations, research, policy, and heritage management.
