COURSE CURRICULUM

The LL.M. in International Arbitration offers a comprehensive and structured curriculum that prepares students for careers in the increasingly important field of cross-border dispute resolution. The program begins with an intensive introduction to international arbitration alongside a 15 EC Research and Writing Skills course. This module not only equips students with the ability to conduct independent legal research but also trains them in presenting and reporting their findings through papers and presentations. Attendance in this course is compulsory, and successful completion is a prerequisite for progressing to the master’s thesis.In the second block, students engage with two core 5 EC courses: Fundamentals of Arbitration Law and Commercial Contracts. These courses provide a solid foundation in the principles of arbitration and the contractual frameworks within which many disputes arise. The third block builds on this foundation with a 10 EC course in International Commercial Arbitration, offering students in-depth knowledge of the procedures, rules, and practices that govern commercial arbitration globally.The fourth block further broadens expertise with a 5 EC course in International Trade and Investment Law, complemented by a 5 EC elective that allows students to tailor their studies to individual interests. The fifth and final block combines a master thesis with a 5 EC course in Investment Arbitration, giving students the opportunity to apply their acquired knowledge to research while simultaneously exploring the distinctive features of disputes between investors and states.Throughout the program, students are taught by both academics and practitioners actively engaged in the field of international arbitration, ensuring a blend of theoretical insight and practical expertise. In addition, the program provides opportunities to participate in international moot courts, giving students valuable hands-on experience in advocacy and dispute resolution. By the end of the LL.M., graduates will have gained knowledge from both the perspective of legal counsel and arbitrators, making them well-prepared to enter the professional world of international arbitration and dispute resolution.
