COURSE CURRICULUM
The LL.M. in International and European Union Law with a focus on the legal effects of economic integration is carefully structured to build on prior legal knowledge while offering advanced, specialised training. Students are expected to have a background in Introduction to International and European Union Law, European Union Law, and Public International Law from their LL.B. studies. Those without this foundation are provided with preparatory literature to ensure they begin the program with the necessary grounding. The curriculum is organised into five blocks, each lasting between six and eight weeks. The first block serves as a general advanced introduction to public international law and European Union law at the master’s level. It also develops key academic and professional skills, including legal research, writing, and presentation. A distinctive feature of this block is its integrated approach, highlighting the interconnectedness between international, EU, and national legal orders, as well as between substantive legal knowledge and practical skills. At the start of the second block, students choose one of two specialisations: European Union Law or International Law. This choice shapes their academic trajectory and ensures they gain focused expertise. In the third block, the program deepens this knowledge by examining specific topics and policy areas such as privacy and data protection, environmental and climate change law, or trade and investment. These are studied from the combined perspectives of international and EU law, highlighting the interaction between different legal frameworks. The fourth block offers flexibility, allowing students to tailor their studies by selecting at least two electives: one restricted elective aligned with their chosen specialisation and one free elective. This enables students to adapt the program to their personal interests and career goals. The fifth block acts as a bridge to professional practice, where students work on solving real legal questions provided by external organisations, preparing them for future roles in law and policy. In parallel with coursework, from December to July, students follow the IEUL master thesis trajectory. During this period, they research and write a master thesis on a topic within international and/or EU law, guided by faculty supervision. This process allows students to demonstrate their ability to engage in independent legal research and contribute to academic and professional debates in their chosen field.
