COURSE CURRICULUM

The International Bachelor Communication and Media (IBCoM) is a three-year program that combines theoretical study, research training, and practical experience to prepare students for academic or professional careers in media and communication. The first year provides a fixed curriculum that introduces students to the field and equips them with essential analytical and academic skills. Courses cover diverse areas such as human communication, social science research, statistical analysis, media industries, audiences, organizational communication, intercultural communication, and the impact of communication technologies. Students also gain training in academic writing and cross-national comparative research, ensuring a solid foundation for their later studies.In the second year, students deepen their understanding through mandatory courses in international and global communication, research methods, and applied workshops in communication management and new media production. A distinctive feature of this year is the ability to specialize by selecting two focus areas from six options: Communication and Politics, Communication, Culture and Society, Communication and Business, Media and Entertainment, International and Global Communication, or New Media Technologies. This flexibility allows students to tailor the program to their interests. Electives in other disciplines such as economics, history, business, or sociology add further breadth. The year concludes with a compulsory internship, giving students practical experience in the professional field and helping them connect theory to practice.The third year offers opportunities for international exchange or, alternatively, a minor in another discipline at Erasmus University or another Dutch institution. Regardless of the chosen path, students refine their expertise through advanced courses such as Communication Ethics and prepare for graduation with the Bachelor Thesis Class. The program culminates in the completion of a bachelor’s thesis on a topic selected in consultation with faculty, allowing students to showcase their research and analytical skills.
