COURSE CURRICULUM

The International Bachelor of History offers a comprehensive program fully taught in English, combining a strong foundation in historical knowledge with opportunities for personalisation and international experiences. In the first year, students are introduced to the main themes and methods of historical study. The courses cover global history, early-modern and modern societies, and Dutch history in a globalising world, while heuristic skills and academic research methods help students build a strong academic foundation. The year concludes with a final paper that integrates the knowledge and skills acquired throughout the four terms. The second year allows students to specialise by choosing a focus area in Economic History, International Relations, Social History, or Cultural History. Alongside these major courses, students deepen their expertise with electives and advanced training in both quantitative and qualitative historical research methods. Courses such as International Economic Relations, Migration and Citizenship, and Religion, Culture and Global Encounters highlight the program’s global and interdisciplinary scope. This combination of thematic studies and methodological training prepares students to analyse complex historical questions from multiple perspectives. In the third year, students have the freedom to shape their academic path further. Options include pursuing a minor in a different discipline, gaining practical experience through an internship, completing an educational minor, or studying abroad for six months at one of Erasmus University’s partner institutions. This international and interdisciplinary flexibility ensures students can tailor their studies to fit their personal interests and career ambitions. The final stage of the program is the bachelor thesis, where students conduct independent historical research under the guidance of experienced staff. By combining strong academic skills, focus area specialisation, and practical or international experiences, graduates are well prepared for further academic study or careers in research, education, culture, policy, and beyond.
