COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science in Science Education and Communication (SEC) is a full-time, 24-month program accredited by the NVAO, offering 120 ECTS credits. It is designed for students with a Bachelor of Science in the physical sciences or engineering, as well as for those who already hold a master’s degree and wish to become teachers. The program combines a professional teaching track with an advanced science component, providing a comprehensive foundation in both subject knowledge and educational expertise. Students in the program can pursue teaching qualifications in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science, or Research & Design. The first-year professional component equips aspiring teachers with the pedagogical skills, didactic competencies, and subject-specific knowledge needed to teach effectively in the upper grades of havo and vwo. The program also emphasizes advanced teaching methodologies, educational technology, and educational innovation, ensuring that graduates are prepared to develop engaging and effective learning experiences. Courses in the science and technology component are offered in English, while the remainder of the curriculum is taught in Dutch. Students gain practical experience through teaching placements, allowing them to apply theoretical knowledge in real classroom settings. The program combines rigorous academic study with hands-on professional training, fostering reflective and competent educators who can contribute to the improvement of science education.
