ABOUT UNIVERSITY
Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) is the oldest and largest technical university in the Netherlands, located in the city of Delft. Founded on January 8, 1842, by King William II as a royal academy, its initial mission was to train civil servants for the Dutch East Indies and educate engineers and apprentices to support national industry and trade. Over time, the institution evolved, becoming a polytechnic school in 1864 and later an institute of technology in 1905, eventually gaining full university status. In 1986, it adopted the name Delft University of Technology. TU Delft is widely recognized as one of Europe’s leading technical universities and is consistently ranked among the best in the world for architecture and engineering disciplines. According to the 2024 QS World University Rankings, TU Delft ranks third globally in architecture, third in mechanical and aerospace engineering, third in civil and structural engineering, and holds strong positions in chemical engineering and design. The university offers education and research across eight faculties and numerous research institutes, serving approximately 27,000 students and employing thousands of staff, including over 1,300 faculty members. Throughout its history, TU Delft has been associated with several Dutch Nobel laureates, including Jacobus Henricus van ’t Hoff, Heike Kamerlingh Onnes, and Simon van der Meer. TU Delft is also a member of prominent university alliances such as the IDEA League, CESAER, UNITECH International, and others. The university’s early years saw its first director, Antoine Lipkens, who contributed to Dutch optical telegraph technology. The transition from a royal academy to a polytechnic school in 1864 marked a shift towards engineering and architectural education tailored to the industrialization era. TU Delft continues to be a prominent institution known for its rigorous technical education, innovative research, and strong international collaborations.
