ABOUT UNIVERSITY

The University of Malta (UM), formerly known as UOM, is Malta’s primary higher education institution, offering undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral degrees. It is affiliated with several international academic networks, including the European University Association, the Association of Commonwealth Universities, and the International Student Exchange Programme (ISEP). The abbreviation "Melit" is used for post-nominals, derived from the Latin "Melita."UM traces its origins to the Collegium Melitense, a Jesuit college founded in 1592 in Valletta. Following the Jesuits' expulsion in 1768, the college continued under the control of the Order of St. John. It officially became the University of Malta in 1769 by decree of Grand Master Manuel Pinto da Fonseca. It experienced temporary closure during political changes but was consistently re-established, notably after the French occupation and during the British colonial period. From 1937 to 1974, it was known as the Royal University of Malta.Due to space limitations, the university expanded from its original Valletta site to a larger campus in Msida during the 1960s. The university continues to collaborate with EU institutions, engages in programs like Erasmus and Leonardo, and maintains strong ties with local industries and public sector bodies to enhance education and employment relevance.
