COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Medical Physics at the University of Galway requires students to complete 90 ECTS credits in Year 1. Radiation Fundamentals (PH5103) introduces the physical principles of ionizing radiation, its interactions with matter, and radiation protection concepts. Medical Imaging (PH5104) and Radiological Imaging Technology and Safety (PH5120) explore diagnostic imaging modalities, imaging system design, optimisation, and safety standards. Physics of Radiotherapy (PH5105) focuses on radiation treatment planning, dosimetry, and therapeutic applications. Clinical Instrumentation (PH5102) examines the operation, calibration, and quality assurance of medical devices used in hospital settings.The program also integrates contemporary developments and professional awareness. AI Applications in Medical Physics (PH5122) highlights the growing role of artificial intelligence and data-driven technologies in imaging and treatment planning. Introduction to Workplace Hazards in Healthcare (PH5121) addresses safety management and risk assessment in clinical environments.A significant component of the degree is the Research Project (PH5110), where students undertake an in-depth investigation under academic or clinical supervision. This project strengthens analytical, experimental, and problem-solving skills, preparing graduates for clinical training, research, and professional practice in medical physics.
