COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Genomics and Computational Biology is structured as a one-year program totaling 90 ECTS, designed to provide both theoretical knowledge and hands-on experience in genomics and computational analysis. In Year 1, students engage in a combination of core and optional modules that cover molecular biology, programming, statistics, and data analysis. Core modules include Genomics Techniques 1, the Genomics Project, Medical Genomics 1 and 2, Genomics Research Methods, Genomics at Scale, and Pathogen Genomic Epidemiology and Surveillance, which provide foundational laboratory skills, data management, and applied genomics experience. Optional modules allow students to tailor their learning to their interests, including courses in molecular and cellular biology, bioinformatics, Bayesian modelling, machine learning and deep learning for genomics, statistical computing for biomedical data, data visualisation, networks, and web and network science. There is also the Genomics Professional Experience module, which offers 15 ECTS of practical, work-based learning, giving students exposure to real-world genomic data applications. Semester 1 emphasizes foundational skills, with modules in laboratory genomics, medical genomics, programming, and introductory data analysis. Semester 2 builds on these skills with advanced modules in genomics data analysis, medical genomics II, pathogen genomics, and large-scale genomic studies, alongside opportunities for specialization through optional modules in bioinformatics, immunology, mathematical molecular biology, and computational tools. Across the year, students gain proficiency in integrating quantitative, computational, and biological methods to analyse complex genomic datasets, apply statistical and machine learning techniques, and interpret findings in a biological and clinical context. By completing the required core modules and optional selections, graduates develop the technical expertise, analytical skills, and practical experience necessary to work in genomics research, precision medicine, bioinformatics, biotechnology, or to pursue doctoral studies in genomics and computational biology. The curriculum ensures students are well-prepared to contribute to high-throughput data analysis projects, develop computational solutions for biological questions, and participate in interdisciplinary genomic research.
