COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc Fintech (Economics and Financial Technology) at University of Galway is structured as a one-year, 90-ECTS program designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of digital finance, economics, and data-driven financial technologies. The curriculum is carefully balanced between core modules, which ensure mastery of essential fintech concepts, and optional modules, allowing students to tailor their studies to their interests and career goals. In the first semester, students engage with foundational courses such as Financial Technology and Economics, Applied Portfolio Management, Econometrics, and the Fintech Project, which together develop both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in economic analysis, financial modelling, and technology application. Optional modules such as Microeconomic Theory, Macroeconomic Theory and Policy, Strategic Management, Intermediate Corporate Finance, and Information Technology Law offer the opportunity to deepen understanding in complementary areas, fostering a rounded perspective on the economic and regulatory environment of fintech. In the second semester, students continue to build technical and analytical expertise with core modules including Financial Data Analytics and Contemporary Issues in Fintech, which focus on real-world applications, advanced data analysis, and emerging trends in digital finance. A wide range of optional modules allows students to specialise further in areas such as Applied Behavioural Economics and Finance, Derivatives and Risk Management, Green and Sustainable Finance, International Finance, Applied Econometrics, Economics and the Global Economy, Customer Engagement and Analytics via Digital Platforms, and Advanced Corporate Finance. This combination of required and optional modules ensures that graduates gain both the quantitative, analytical, and technological skills demanded by the fintech sector, as well as a strategic understanding of economic systems and global financial markets. By the end of the program, students are equipped to lead projects, make data-driven financial decisions, and innovate in fintech organisations, financial institutions, consultancy, or research roles, making them highly adaptable professionals ready for the rapidly evolving digital finance industry.
