COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Diabetes Care and Management is a one-year, interdisciplinary program that equips healthcare professionals with advanced knowledge and skills to address the global diabetes epidemic. With diabetes projected to affect over 600 million people by 2030, this course responds to urgent calls from the World Health Organization and Ireland’s Health Service Executive for improved prevention, management, and care. The program combines clinical, lifestyle, and research-focused training, enabling students to understand the pathophysiology of diabetes, assess patient needs, and design evidence-based interventions. Core modules provide a strong foundation in research methods, preventive cardiology, and diabetes care, while a substantial research project allows students to apply knowledge in a practical context, developing skills in analysis, evaluation, and scientific communication. Optional modules cover key areas such as tobacco cessation, diet and weight management, physical activity, pharmacotherapeutics, and lifestyle risk factor modification, giving students flexibility to tailor their learning to specific professional goals. Emphasis is placed on interprofessional collaboration, leadership, and health system awareness, preparing graduates to implement effective diabetes care strategies across clinical, community, and public health settings. Students are trained to integrate emerging evidence, digital health tools, and patient-centered approaches to improve outcomes and promote long-term disease management. Graduates are prepared for roles in hospitals, primary care, community health, and policy development, enabling them to contribute meaningfully to local, national, and global initiatives aimed at reducing the burden of diabetes. While the program will not be enrolling in September 2026, prospective students are encouraged to follow communications from the University for future intake opportunities.
