COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Data Analytics at the University of Galway is a full-time, one-year program (90 ECTS) designed to equip graduates with the technical expertise and analytical skills required for a rapidly expanding data-driven world. It combines theoretical foundations with practical experience, giving students the ability to transform raw data into actionable insights across a variety of domains such as business, healthcare, finance, and public policy. The curriculum is structured across two semesters and a substantial project component, balancing core modules with optional electives to allow a degree of specialisation according to students’ interests and career goals.In the first semester, students develop a solid grounding in programming for data analytics, information retrieval, natural language processing, and principles of machine learning. They also complete a major Data Analytics Project, providing hands-on experience in applying analytical methods to real-world problems. Optional modules such as Modelling I, Tools and Techniques for Large Scale Data Analytics, Applied Statistics, Discrete Mathematics, and Systems Modelling and Simulation allow students to tailor their learning and explore advanced topics relevant to big data and computational methods.The second semester deepens technical expertise with modules in Data Visualisation, Web and Network Science, Deep Learning, and Case Studies in Data Analytics. Elective options such as Advanced Topics in Natural Language Processing, Knowledge Graphs, and Statistics for Data Science further enhance specialised skills. The combination of applied projects, real datasets, and research-led teaching ensures that graduates are well-prepared for careers as data scientists, data analysts, machine learning engineers, or analytics consultants. By the end of the program, students are capable of designing, implementing, and communicating complex data-driven solutions, making them highly competitive in the global analytics job market.
