COURSE CURRICULUM

The full-time MSc in Artificial Intelligence at the University of Galway is a 12-month program designed to equip students with advanced technical knowledge, practical skills, and ethical awareness in the rapidly evolving field of AI. Across two semesters, students engage with a carefully structured curriculum worth 90 ECTS, which balances core knowledge, applied learning, and research exploration. Core modules include Artificial Intelligence and Ethics, which examines the societal, legal, and moral implications of AI systems; Programming and Tools for AI, providing hands-on experience with essential AI software and frameworks; Principles of Machine Learning, covering supervised, unsupervised, and reinforcement learning algorithms; and Deep Learning, which focuses on neural networks for complex pattern recognition and decision-making. Students also study Introduction to Natural Language Processing, enabling them to develop systems that process and generate human language, and Agents, Multi-Agent Systems and Reinforcement Learning, which introduces autonomous decision-making in dynamic environments. Data Visualisation and Information Retrieval modules strengthen students’ abilities to extract, analyse, and communicate insights from large datasets, while the Artificial Intelligence Project provides an opportunity to integrate theory and practice in a substantial applied research project. Optional modules allow further tailoring of the degree to individual interests, including Optimisation, Advanced Topics in Natural Language Processing, Knowledge Graphs, Embedded Image Processing, and Systems Modelling and Simulation. The program emphasizes research-led teaching, ethical AI practice, and problem-solving skills, preparing graduates to implement AI technologies responsibly across domains such as healthcare, cybersecurity, business, and robotics. By completing this MSc, students gain a strong foundation in AI theory and applications, advanced technical competence, and the critical thinking necessary to contribute to cutting-edge research or lead AI initiatives in industry and academia.
