COURSE CURRICULUM

Students enrolled in the MSc in Coastal and Marine Environments at the University of Galway must complete 90 ECTS credits in Year 1 by successfully undertaking all required modules. A module is an examinable unit of study involving lectures, seminars, fieldwork, and assessments. Most programs operate across two semesters per academic year.The curriculum is structured to provide an integrated understanding of coastal and marine systems through scientific, technical, and policy perspectives. Geospatial Techniques develops practical skills in spatial data analysis, mapping, and geographic information systems, equipping students with essential tools for environmental assessment and coastal management. Dynamics of Climate Change examines the processes driving climate variability and change, with particular emphasis on impacts relevant to marine and coastal environments. Coastal Geomorphology explores shoreline processes, sediment dynamics, and landscape evolution, building knowledge of how coastal systems respond to natural and human pressures.Biodiversity and Coastal Change focuses on ecological systems, species distribution, and habitat transformation within changing marine and coastal contexts. Coastal and Marine Resilience addresses adaptation strategies, risk reduction, and sustainable responses to environmental stressors such as sea-level rise and extreme events. Sustainability Planning and Policy for Marine Environments examines governance frameworks, regulatory systems, and integrated planning approaches that support long-term environmental stewardship.The program culminates in a Dissertation (Research Paper), an independent research project that allows students to apply theoretical knowledge and field-based skills to a specialised topic. Together, these modules provide comprehensive, field-intensive training in the sustainable management and resilience of coastal and marine environments.
