COURSE CURRICULUM

Curriculum information relates to the current academic year and may be subject to change. Students must complete 90 ECTS credits in Year 1 of the MSc in Clinical Neuroscience at the University of Galway by taking all required modules and selecting appropriate optional modules to reach the total credit requirement. A module is an examinable unit of study with lectures, tutorials, and assessments, while optional modules allow students to tailor their studies to their academic background and research interests. The academic year is divided into two semesters.In Semester 1, students complete two required modules: Clinical and Experimental Cognitive Neuroscience (5 credits), which examines cognitive processes through experimental and clinical perspectives, and the Dissertation (30 credits), an independent research project developed under academic supervision. A wide range of optional modules is available in Semester 1, including Neurophysiology; Applied Statistics I; Neuropsychology; Neuroanatomy; Medical Genomics 1; Applied Concepts in Pharmacology; Fundamental Concepts in Pharmacology; Introduction to Molecular and Cellular Biology; and Advanced Research Methods (10 credits).In Semester 2, students undertake two required modules: Human Neuroimaging (10 credits), focusing on imaging techniques and their clinical and research applications, and Neuropsychiatry and Mental Health (10 credits), which explores the neurobiological basis of psychiatric disorders. Optional modules in Semester 2 include Research Methods in Neuroscience (10 credits) and Cognitive Psychology (5 credits).Together, this structure provides rigorous interdisciplinary training in brain science, clinical application, and advanced research skills, preparing graduates for doctoral study and careers in clinical psychology or neuroscience research.
