COURSE CURRICULUM

The MSc in Applied Multilingualism is structured over one academic year and requires students to complete 90 ECTS credits through a combination of required and optional modules. Curriculum information relates to the current academic year and offerings may be subject to change. Students must successfully complete all required modules and select from a range of optional modules to achieve the total credit requirement. Each module represents an examinable component of the program, involving lectures, seminars, and assessed coursework.In Semester 1, students complete core modules that establish the theoretical and research foundations of the program. These include Research Methods (10 credits), which develops academic and analytical skills; Cultural, Linguistic and Social Diversity (10 credits), which explores multilingualism in social contexts; Psycholinguistics of Multilingualism (10 credits), focusing on cognitive processes in multiple language use; and a Dissertation in Applied Multilingualism (30 credits), a substantial independent research project. Alongside these, students may choose from a wide range of optional modules, including advanced language skills in French, Spanish, Italian, and Irish, beginners’ courses in German, Italian, Irish, or Chinese, and specialised topics such as Cultural Awareness in Research, Language, Gender and Power, and Using Evidence to Inform Practice.In Semester 2, students complete the required module Sociolinguistics of Multilingualism (10 credits), examining language use in society, identity, and policy contexts. Additional optional modules allow further specialisation in areas such as Narratives in Childhood, Applied Multilingualism: Theoretical Perspectives and Practical Approaches, Audiovisual Translation, Resisting through Culture, advanced language skills, and language development courses.Overall, the curriculum combines theoretical depth, research training, and practical language development, enabling students to tailor their studies while gaining a comprehensive understanding of multilingualism from cognitive, social, cultural, and applied perspectives.
