COURSE CURRICULUM
The curriculum for the Master of Science in Midwifery (Advanced Practice Midwifery) is designed to provide experienced registered midwives with advanced knowledge, clinical expertise, and leadership skills necessary for an expanded autonomous scope of practice. Students must earn a defined number of credits, known as ECTS, each year by completing all required modules and, where applicable, selecting optional modules to meet the total credit requirements. Each module represents an examinable component of the course, involving lectures, tutorials, and practical assignments, and is assigned a unique module code. Some programs group related modules into subjects, which may have core required modules alongside optional modules to achieve the subject’s total credits. In the first year, students focus on foundational and advanced practice competencies across two semesters, completing four required modules totaling 40 credits. Semester 1 includes Decision Making and Advanced Practice Professional Roles, which equips students with the capacity for autonomous clinical judgment and professional role development, and Advanced Research Methods, which develops the skills needed to engage with evidence-based practice and research application. Semester 2 focuses on Leadership, Quality Improvement and Governance, preparing students to influence service delivery, policy, and organisational effectiveness, alongside Advanced Health Assessment, which strengthens clinical assessment skills essential for managing complex cases and improving patient care outcomes. By integrating theory, applied practice, and leadership development, the curriculum ensures that graduates are capable of operating at an advanced level within midwifery practice. It equips midwives with the decision-making, clinical, research, and governance expertise required to respond to the needs of women and people, adapt to evolving healthcare environments, and lead improvements in maternal and neonatal services. Overall, the program provides a structured, practice-focused pathway for midwives to develop expert competence and leadership in advanced practice, ensuring safe, autonomous, and high-quality care delivery across diverse clinical settings.
