COURSE CURRICULUM

The clinical education program at the University of Galway comprises 60 ECTS credits in Year 1 and is structured around three required modules that integrate theory, research, and applied practice in health professions education.Students begin with Evidence Based Education, which explores the principles underpinning effective teaching and learning in clinical settings. This module develops critical appraisal skills, enabling participants to evaluate educational literature, apply best evidence to their own teaching practice, and enhance the quality of learner support and assessment.Educational Research builds on this foundation by introducing research design, methodology, and data analysis relevant to clinical and health professions education. Students gain the skills necessary to design and conduct rigorous educational research, with a focus on improving teaching practice, curriculum development, and learner outcomes within healthcare environments.The program culminates in the Clinical Teaching Research Dissertation, an independent research project that allows students to investigate a specific issue in clinical education. Under academic supervision, participants apply research methods to real-world educational challenges, contributing new insights to the field while strengthening their professional expertise as clinical educators. Together, these modules provide a coherent, research-led pathway for healthcare professionals seeking to advance their leadership and scholarship in clinical education.
