COURSE CURRICULUM

The Level 9 Postgraduate program in Perioperative Nursing at the University of Galway combines advanced theoretical knowledge with practical clinical experience to prepare registered nurses for specialist roles in surgical and perioperative care. Over two years, the program develops expertise in patient assessment, the physiological effects of surgery, prevention of anaesthetic and surgical complications, and evidence-based perioperative practice. In the first year, students complete 60 credits that include specialist modules on the physiological impacts of surgery, prevention of anaesthetic and surgical complications, clinical governance, service improvement, clinical competence, and advanced research methods. These modules ensure that students acquire both the technical skills and critical thinking necessary to provide safe, high-quality care in complex perioperative environments. The second year is dedicated to a 30-credit research dissertation, giving students the opportunity to apply research methods to clinical questions, evaluate evidence, and contribute to the advancement of perioperative nursing practice. The program’s structure integrates hands-on learning with scholarly inquiry, enabling students to develop leadership capabilities, make informed clinical decisions, and engage in service improvements within surgical settings.
