COURSE CURRICULUM

The curriculum for this postgraduate program is structured over one academic year and requires students to complete 90 credits. The program combines required core components with a wide range of optional modules, allowing students to tailor their studies to specific academic interests while developing advanced research and analytical skills.At the centre of the program is the required Dissertation, a substantial independent research project that enables students to investigate a topic in depth and demonstrate scholarly expertise. Supporting this is the required module Writing and Research, which strengthens critical reading, academic writing, and methodological skills essential for postgraduate study. Together, these core elements ensure that students build a strong foundation in research design, argumentation, and sustained scholarly enquiry.Students then select from a diverse range of optional modules spanning literature, film, media, and cultural studies. Options include creative and practice-based learning through Writing Workshop: Poetry, as well as thematic and critical studies such as Literature of North America, Environmental Literature: Nature and Narration, Literature and Colonialism, and Travel Literature. Modules like WB Yeats and the Cultural Revolution provide focused author studies, while Ireland on Screen and Film, Politics, and Colonialism explore cinematic and political contexts. Contemporary and socially engaged topics are addressed in Media for Social Change and Service Learning: Literary Studies in the Community, while Literature for Children and Young Adults in the 21st Century broadens engagement with diverse audiences. Language, Gender and Power further examines intersections of identity and discourse.
