COURSE CURRICULUM

The MEconSc in International Finance at the University of Galway requires students to complete 90 credits in Year 1 for the current academic year, although module offerings may be subject to change. The curriculum combines rigorous economic theory with advanced quantitative and financial training to prepare students for global financial careers. A set of required modules forms the core of the program. Econometrics develops strong statistical and data analysis skills essential for empirical research and financial modelling. Microeconomic Theory and Macroeconomic Theory and Policy provide advanced foundations in economic behaviour, market structures, and policy analysis. Applied Portfolio Management focuses on investment strategies and asset allocation, while Derivatives and Risk Management examines financial instruments and techniques used to manage market risk. Financial Data Analytics strengthens computational and analytical capabilities for handling large financial datasets, and the International Finance Project allows students to apply their knowledge to a substantial, practice-oriented research assignment.In addition to these core modules, students may select from optional subjects to deepen their specialization. Options include International Finance, which explores exchange rate dynamics and global capital flows; Economics and the Global Economy, which examines international economic integration; Green and Sustainable Finance, focusing on environmental and responsible investment strategies; and Applied Behavioural Economics and Finance, which analyzes how psychological factors influence financial decision-making. Together, the program provides a comprehensive blend of theory, quantitative expertise, and applied financial skills tailored to international markets.
