COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA in Translation Studies curriculum is designed to provide a comprehensive foundation in translation theory, practice, and research, while allowing students to develop advanced language skills across multiple languages. The program is structured over a single academic year with a total of 90 credits, integrating both required and optional modules. Core modules include Graduate Research Skills in Languages and Cultures, which equips students with essential research methods and academic skills, and Translation Theory and Practice, which provides a theoretical and practical understanding of translation processes. Students can tailor their studies according to their language focus, with advanced language skills modules available in French, Spanish, German, and Italian, allowing for both first and second language development. Translation methodology modules support language-specific practice, while optional audiovisual translation modules focus on interlingual subtitling, reflecting the diverse professional applications of translation. The program also offers language-specific dissertation options, enabling students to conduct an in-depth research project in their chosen language. Additional modules explore interdisciplinary topics such as psycholinguistics, applied linguistics, language and intercultural communication, and the study of language in social and environmental contexts, enriching students’ understanding of the broader cultural and communicative aspects of translation. Through this mix of core training, language development, and specialised research projects, graduates acquire the practical, theoretical, and technological competencies required for professional translation work, including the use of computer-assisted translation tools, localisation techniques, and project management skills.
