COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA Journalism at the University of Galway requires students to complete 90 ECTS credits in Year 1. The program combines required core modules with selected optional modules, ensuring a balance between professional newsroom training, academic analysis, and specialised reporting skills.The required modules establish the foundation of the degree. Global Media and Society (DJ6127) examines the relationship between media systems, politics, and society in a global context. Journalism Bootcamp (DJ6115) provides intensive practical training in reporting, writing, interviewing, and newsroom production. Multimedia Newsdays (DJ6112) simulates real newsroom environments where students produce content across print, broadcast, and digital platforms under deadline pressure. Researching the Media (DJ6122) develops analytical and research skills essential for in-depth reporting and academic inquiry. Media Law (DJ6143) introduces legal principles governing journalism, including defamation, privacy, and court reporting. Employability and Career Skills (DJ6130) prepares students for professional practice through portfolio development, industry engagement, and career planning.Students enhance their expertise through optional modules aligned with their interests. These include Reporting Economics and Politics (DJ6135), Introduction to Investigative Reporting (DJ6151), Communicating Climate Action and Science (DJ6144), Data Analysis and Visualisation (DJ6157), and the Final Project for Journalism, Media and Communication (DJ6124). Broader interdisciplinary options such as International Human Rights Law (LW5117) and International Peace Operations (LW5123) allow students to deepen their understanding of global affairs.Together, the curriculum equips graduates with strong practical skills, legal awareness, critical thinking abilities, and subject specialisation, preparing them for dynamic careers across modern multimedia journalism platforms.
