COURSE CURRICULUM

The MA program at the University of Galway requires students to complete 90 credits in Year 1 under the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS), though module offerings may be subject to change for the current academic year. The curriculum combines required core modules with a wide selection of optional subjects, enabling students to tailor their studies across literature, film, media, philosophy, and cultural analysis. A module is an examinable unit identified by a unique code and typically includes lectures, seminars, and assessed coursework.Students complete several required modules that form the academic foundation of the program. These include The Art of Reading, which develops advanced skills in close textual analysis; Worlds of Fantasy: Literature, Film, Computer Games, which explores imaginative forms across media; Resisting through Culture: Conflicts in Europe and Beyond, examining cultural responses to conflict; Contemporary Literary Genres, which analyzes modern literary forms; and a 30-credit Dissertation involving independent, supervised research.In addition to these core components, students may choose from a diverse range of optional modules. Options include Critical Theory I; Language, Gender and Power; Ethics and Artificial Intelligence; Language for Environmental Futures; American Cinema: History, Aesthetics, Ideology; Graduate Research Skills in Languages and Cultures; Translation Theory and Practice; Global Media and Society; Film Exhibition, Administration and Education; Film, Politics, and Colonialism; Researching the Media; Books Journalism; Philosophy of Nature and Technology; and Media for Social Change. Together, the program fosters critical thinking, intercultural awareness, research expertise, and strong communication skills across literary, cinematic, and media contexts.
