COURSE CURRICULUM
The LLM in International Migration and Refugee Law and Policy requires students to complete 90 ECTS credits in Year 1, with curriculum information relating to the current academic year and subject to change. Credits represent examinable modules involving lectures, seminars, tutorials, and assessed coursework. Students must complete required modules and select optional modules to reach the total credit requirement. The program includes three core requirements. Contemporary Issues in International Migration Law (LW5105), worth 10 credits, examines evolving legal and policy debates surrounding global migration governance. International Refugee Law (LW5114), also 10 credits, provides an in-depth study of the international protection regime, including asylum systems and state obligations toward refugees. The Dissertation (LW450), worth 30 credits, enables students to conduct independent research on a specialised topic within migration, refugee law, or displacement policy.Students complete the remaining credits by selecting from a wide range of optional modules offered in Semester 1. These include The Common European Asylum System, International Human Rights Law, Public International Law, International Humanitarian Law, Gender and Human Rights, Climate Justice, International Criminal Law, Transitional Justice, International Peace Operations, and Counter-Terrorism and Human Rights. Broader thematic options such as Business and Human Rights, Advocacy and Access to Justice, Minority Groups and the Criminal Justice System, Policing, Security and Rights, and Criminology, Criminal Justice and Human Rights allow students to situate migration law within wider human rights and governance frameworks. Additional specialised offerings include International Child Rights, Islam and Human Rights I, Mental Health Law and Policy, Disability Law and Policy modules, EU Competition Law, International Environmental Law, and Digital Transformation & Access to Justice. This flexible structure enables students to critically analyse how migration and asylum laws operate across domestic, regional, and international systems, while developing advanced research, advocacy, and policy skills relevant to careers in international organisations, NGOs, legal practice, and governmental institutions working in migration and refugee protection.
