COURSE CURRICULUM

The LLM at the University of Galway requires students to complete 90 credits in Year 1 under the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS), though module offerings may be subject to change for the current academic year. The curriculum is structured to combine advanced legal scholarship with specialized optional modules, allowing students to tailor their studies to their professional interests. A module is an examinable component of the program, identified by a unique code, and involves lectures, seminars, and assessed coursework. Required modules form the academic core of the degree. All students complete a 30-credit Dissertation, which involves independent, in-depth research on a chosen legal topic under faculty supervision, and Advanced Legal Research and Method, which develops critical research, analytical, and methodological skills essential for postgraduate legal study.Alongside these required components, students select from a range of optional modules in Semester 1, including Legal Skills: Commercial Practice, Advocacy and Dispute Resolution; Advanced Intellectual Property Law and Development; EU Competition Law; Law of International Business Transactions; Law and Economics of Corporate Transactions; and participation in the Vis Moot, an internationally recognized advocacy competition worth 20 credits. In Semester 2, students may also choose Economics and the Global Economy to strengthen their understanding of the broader economic context shaping international law and commerce. Together, the program integrates rigorous academic research with practical and commercial legal expertise, preparing graduates for careers in international legal practice, corporate advisory roles, and regulatory environments.
