COURSE CURRICULUM
The LLM in Gender and Human Rights Law and Policy at University of Galway is a one-year, full-time program designed to provide students with an in-depth understanding of international and domestic frameworks for protecting human rights, with a particular focus on gender equality. The curriculum combines core modules with a wide range of optional modules, enabling students to tailor their studies to their interests and career goals while gaining both theoretical and practical legal expertise. Core modules include Gender and Human Rights, International Human Rights Law, and a Dissertation, which together develop the research, analytical, and advocacy skills needed to address complex legal issues in a global context. Optional modules span diverse topics such as International Humanitarian Law, Transitional Justice, International Refugee Law, Business and Human Rights, Climate Justice, Mental Health Law and Policy, and European Convention on Human Rights, among others. These electives allow students to explore intersections between law, policy, and social change, providing a nuanced understanding of how legal frameworks impact real-world outcomes for individuals and communities. The Dissertation requires students to undertake substantial independent research on a topic of relevance, producing a rigorous, professional, and original contribution to the field. By combining foundational knowledge with specialised topics and practical research experience, the program prepares graduates for careers in public policy, international and national human rights organisations, legal practice, advocacy, and research. The LLM equips students with the critical thinking, legal reasoning, and policy analysis skills needed to drive meaningful social transformation, influence legislation, and implement strategies that promote gender equality and protect human rights. Graduates emerge with the competence to navigate complex legal and social environments, contribute to international human rights discourse, and act as informed, capable professionals committed to advancing social justice and equality. This comprehensive curriculum ensures that students leave the program well-prepared to be leaders and advocates in the global human rights and gender law arena.
