COURSE CURRICULUM
The LLM in Criminology, Criminal Justice and Human Rights at the University of Galway is a comprehensive program designed to prepare graduates for impactful careers in law, policy, and human rights advocacy. This program integrates academic rigor with practical, research-informed learning to develop critical skills in legal analysis, policy evaluation, and advocacy. It is suitable for students from diverse backgrounds who are motivated to engage with complex issues at the intersection of criminology, criminal justice, and human rights. The curriculum combines core and optional modules, allowing students to build both a strong foundation and specialised expertise in areas such as criminology theory, sentencing and penal policy, international criminal law, policing and security, transitional justice, and human rights law. The core module in Criminology, Criminal Justice and Human Rights provides essential knowledge of contemporary challenges in legal and justice systems, while the dissertation allows students to undertake in-depth research and develop advanced skills in legal scholarship and critical thinking. Optional modules, including Climate Justice, Gender and Human Rights, Counter-Terrorism and Human Rights, and International Humanitarian Law, enable students to tailor their studies to specific interests and emerging global issues. Throughout the program, students engage in practical exercises, case studies, and research projects that enhance their ability to analyse complex legal problems, advocate effectively, and design solutions informed by ethical, social, and legal considerations. By combining theoretical learning with practical application, the LLM fosters transferable skills such as interdisciplinary problem-solving, policy analysis, and effective communication, equipping graduates to operate confidently in national and international contexts. Graduates of the program emerge as capable, informed, and socially responsible professionals ready to contribute to justice, legal reform, and human rights initiatives in a globalised world, with the ability to navigate complex legal systems and make meaningful contributions to policy, advocacy, and practice.
