COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc in Zoology at the University of Galway offers students a unique opportunity to explore the diversity, function, and ecology of animals, from molecular and cellular levels to whole organisms and ecosystems. This program is distinctive in Ireland, being the only degree offered as a dedicated Zoology option on the CAO form, and is designed to equip students with the knowledge, practical skills, and professional attributes needed for careers in zoology, conservation, ecological consultancy, and related natural sciences. From the first year, students build a solid foundation in the biological sciences through modules in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics, alongside specialised zoology modules such as Careers in Zoology, which develops research, writing, and career-focused skills. The program emphasises experiential learning, with blended delivery that combines on-campus lectures, fieldwork, and online resources, ensuring students gain both theoretical understanding and hands-on experience. In the second year, students deepen their knowledge of animal taxonomy, diversity, and functional biology, and take the exclusive Field Skills in Zoology module to strengthen practical expertise. Third year introduces a strong focus on ecology, biological statistics, and GIS mapping, complemented by Lab Skills in Zoology, allowing students to acquire essential laboratory competencies. In the final year, students undertake an independent research project guided by a dedicated supervisor, which may be laboratory-based, field-based, or computer-based, and some projects are offered in collaboration with industry partners. Optional residential field modules, currently held in Morocco, further enhance field experience and international exposure. Throughout the program, research-inspired teaching ensures students engage with contemporary zoological science and conservation challenges. Graduates emerge with a broad mastery of zoology, equipped with both specialist knowledge and transferable skills, ready to contribute meaningfully to scientific, environmental, and conservation-focused careers.
