COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc in Social Sciences and Sustainability at the University of Galway is a dynamic program designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of society and the environment, alongside practical skills to address complex social and sustainability challenges. In Year One, students gain a foundational understanding of key disciplines, including sociology, political science, economics, and geography, while developing essential digital literacy through modules such as Digital Citizenship and Digital Skills for the Social Sciences. These modules establish a strong base in both theoretical and applied aspects of social sciences, preparing students for the interdisciplinary approach of the program. Year Two builds on this foundation by deepening students’ knowledge of social sciences and introducing problem-centred learning, research methods, and technological tools such as GIS. A major European field trip in Semester Two offers hands-on exposure to real-world social and environmental issues, enhancing analytical and observational skills. In Year Three, students gain practical experience through a semester-long work-based internship, which can be aligned with their career aspirations. This year also includes the Professional Skills and Pathways module to prepare students for the workplace, alongside elective modules such as Government Fieldtrip, Live Arts Event, Policymaking, Lobbying and Advocacy, and Development & Change, which provide opportunities to explore social and cultural dynamics in practice. Year Four allows students to specialise in their preferred career pathways through elective modules while undertaking an independent research project under the guidance of an experienced academic supervisor. The program offers four indicative study pathways in the final year: Environmental Social Studies, Culture, Creativity and Entrepreneurship, Politics, Society and Identity, and Communities, Engagement and Development. By combining rigorous academic study with practical experience and research, the program equips graduates with the analytical, problem-solving, and leadership skills necessary for careers in government, social enterprises, NGOs, and other sectors focused on sustainable development, community engagement, and social change.
