COURSE CURRICULUM

The GY301 Bachelor of Science (BSc) at the University of Galway offers a flexible and exploratory pathway into the sciences, allowing students to discover and develop their interests before specialising in a chosen area for their four-year honours degree. In the first year, students build a solid foundation across a broad range of scientific disciplines, selecting four introductory modules from Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, and Computing. All modules are accessible to students regardless of prior experience, ensuring support for diverse academic backgrounds. These first-year modules provide essential prerequisite knowledge for progression into second-year pathways, helping students make informed choices about their future specialisations.In the second year, students choose from a wide array of pathways—each a curated set of complementary modules designed to develop in-depth knowledge and graduate skills. Available pathways span Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Plant and AgriBiosciences, Botany and Plant Science, Zoology, Earth and Ocean Sciences, Physics, Applied Physics, Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Computing, Data Science, Anatomy, Physiology, and Pharmacology. Students can explore up to three pathways in Year 2, continue with up to two in Year 3, and ultimately select a single specialism for Year 4, allowing a tailored and progressive approach to learning.To maintain quality and timetabling, some pathways have limited places allocated based on first-year academic performance, and pathway combinations depend on timetable compatibility. The program is taught by research-active lecturers and integrates current research trends, public policy, industry partnerships, and sustainability principles aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Natural science pathways include extensive fieldwork opportunities, and all pathways culminate in a substantive research project in Year 4, supervised by academic experts to enhance graduate attributes and employability.The BSc also offers a variety of international exchange opportunities in Year 3, including Erasmus partnerships in Europe, exchanges in the USA, and Hong Kong, subject to merit requirements. Overall, the GY301 program provides a highly flexible, research-informed, and internationally connected pathway to a tailored scientific specialism, equipping students with the knowledge, skills, and experience to thrive in a rapidly evolving scientific landscape.
