COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc in Psychology at the University of Galway provides students with a broad understanding of human thought, emotion, and behaviour, while developing practical, analytical, and research skills applicable to real-world challenges. In the first year, students are introduced to the core foundational areas of psychology, including cognitive, social, developmental, personality, and biological psychology, alongside modules in research methods and the psychology of learning. This foundation equips students with the knowledge and critical thinking skills required for more advanced study. In the second year, the program builds on this base, deepening knowledge in key areas of psychology while also incorporating professional skills training to prepare students for their third-year experiences. Modules cover experimental and qualitative research methods, perception and attention, memory and cognition, and further studies in developmental, social, and biological psychology. In the third year, students can choose between study abroad, work placement, or a research internship. Study abroad offers the opportunity to engage with psychology in a different cultural and educational context, while placements and research internships allow students to gain hands-on experience either in organisational settings or research teams within the school. The fourth year focuses on applied and specialised areas of psychology, including behavioural analysis, health psychology, forensic and clinical psychology, and cognitive neuroscience. Students can select from a variety of elective modules to tailor their studies, and all students undertake a substantial research project, planning, conducting, and reporting an independent piece of research under academic supervision. This final year consolidates theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and professional competencies, preparing graduates for careers in psychology, research, healthcare, education, and related fields, or for further postgraduate study. The program emphasises critical thinking, evidence-based practice, and the integration of theory with applied experience, ensuring students graduate with the skills and confidence to contribute effectively to diverse professional and academic contexts.
