COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc in Project and Construction Management at the University of Galway is a four-year honours degree designed to develop graduates who can lead and deliver complex projects across a variety of sectors. In year 1, students build a strong foundation in engineering principles, project and construction management, mathematical studies, accounting, management, physics, computing, and engineering graphics, alongside an introduction to enterprise and society. This first year emphasizes analytical thinking, problem-solving, and understanding the core technical and business principles that underpin project delivery. Year 2 expands on these foundations with modules in strength of materials, construction practice, civil engineering materials and design, project planning and organisation, building information modelling, law, and statistics for data science. A community-engaged building project and fundamentals of operations engineering give students practical, hands-on experience in applying technical knowledge. In year 3, the program focuses on professional practice and sustainable project delivery. Students study design of structures, sustainability and energy systems, project management, operations research, business law, economics, human resource management, and entrepreneurial venture development. The year also includes a professional experience program, where students undertake work placements to gain real-world project and construction management experience. Year 4 emphasizes strategic and technical leadership, with modules covering transportation systems and infrastructure, safety, technology innovation, lean systems, estimates and costing, quality systems, and the built environment. Students complete a final year project, which integrates their knowledge and skills to tackle a complex, real-world construction or project management challenge. Across all four years, the curriculum combines theoretical understanding with applied learning, preparing graduates to manage resources, teams, and timelines effectively while ensuring projects meet technical, financial, and sustainability requirements. By the end of the program, students are equipped with the managerial, technical, and professional competencies needed to succeed in project and construction management roles nationally and internationally.
