COURSE CURRICULUM
The B.Sc. (Hons.) in Podiatric Medicine at the University of Galway is a structured four-year program designed to equip students with the knowledge, clinical skills, and professional expertise to practice as competent podiatrists. In the first year, students develop a foundation in podiatric medicine, dermatology, human body function and structure, lower limb kinematics, and professional development, integrating theoretical learning with early practical exposure. In the second year, the program advances to applied podiatric medicine, functional anatomy and biomechanics, lifestyle medicine, applied pathophysiology, microbiology, endocrinology, evidence-based practice, and management of lower extremity wounds, with an emphasis on linking biomedical knowledge to clinical practice. Year three focuses on core clinical competencies, including podiatric medicine, clinical medicine and surgery, pharmacology, podopaediatrics, and research methods with biostatistics, preparing students for patient assessment and management in real-world settings. The final year consolidates clinical, professional, and research skills through modules in podiatric sports and musculoskeletal medicine, leadership and professional practice, high-risk limb management, working with vulnerable adults, and an in-depth research dissertation. Throughout the program, students progressively develop clinical reasoning, practical skills, and professional judgement while participating in hands-on placements, problem-solving exercises, and evidence-based projects. By the end of the degree, graduates are prepared to assess, diagnose, and manage a wide range of foot and lower limb conditions, understand the scientific basis for clinical practice, and apply research findings to patient care. The curriculum emphasizes person-centred, evidence-informed practice and interprofessional collaboration, ensuring that graduates are ready to contribute effectively in multidisciplinary healthcare teams. Completion of this honours program provides the academic and professional foundation to register as a podiatrist, with the confidence and expertise to work in diverse clinical environments, from community clinics to hospitals, sports medicine, and specialized care for high-risk patients.
