COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc in Physics is a four-year honours degree designed to provide a thorough understanding of the fundamental principles governing matter, energy, and the forces of the universe, spanning scales from subatomic particles to the cosmos. In the first year, students build a strong foundation in core physics, mathematics, and applied mathematics, alongside the option to study biology or chemistry, with laboratory work integrated to develop practical experimental skills. The second year introduces more advanced topics in mechanics, electromagnetism, atomic physics, energy, and modern physics, while also developing computational skills through programming and data analysis. Laboratory sessions continue to emphasize practical skills, problem-solving, and scientific reasoning. In the third year, students begin to specialise in one of several streams, including theoretical, applied, biomedical, climate, or astrophysics, with modules tailored to each pathway, while also consolidating core physics knowledge. Advanced laboratory work provides experience with scientific instrumentation, experimental techniques, and professional development. In the fourth year, students deepen their expertise in their chosen specialisation, studying advanced topics such as applied optics and imaging, biophotonics, solid-state physics, exoplanets, and atmospheric physics and climate change. A significant component is the independent research project, undertaken under the guidance of an academic supervisor, which begins with a literature review and culminates in a personal contribution to scientific knowledge. Throughout the degree, emphasis is placed on analytical thinking, problem-solving, teamwork, and scientific communication, ensuring graduates are equipped for careers in research, industry, healthcare, environmental science, or further postgraduate study. The program balances rigorous theoretical knowledge with practical, hands-on experience, preparing students to engage with scientific challenges and contribute to technological and societal advancements. By the end of the course, graduates possess a comprehensive understanding of physics principles, laboratory techniques, computational skills, and research experience, making them highly versatile and in demand in a wide range of scientific and technical fields.
