COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc in Occupational Health and Safety Management (OHSM) at the University of Galway is a four-year honours program that combines a strong foundation in science with applied workplace knowledge and professional skills development. In the first year, students study core scientific subjects including biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics, alongside introductory modules in environmental health and safety, law, and design thinking. The design thinking module fosters creativity, collaboration, communication, and problem-solving skills by encouraging students to work in multidisciplinary teams to develop innovative solutions to societal challenges. In the second year, the focus shifts to applied science and engineering, with modules such as Fundamentals of Operations Engineering and Physics of the Environment, alongside anatomy, physiology, and environmental health and safety law. Students also enhance their academic and professional skills through modules in scientific writing and research techniques. Third-year study centres on core environmental health and safety practice, with significant laboratory-based training and practical skill development. Students engage with the University Career Development Centre to improve employability skills, preparing professional CVs and interview techniques. This year also marks the beginning of the structured work placement, bridging classroom learning with practical workplace experience. The fourth year is the highlight of the program, featuring a seven-month paid placement across diverse sectors including medical devices, chemical manufacturing, food production, and regulatory bodies. Students integrate prior knowledge while working alongside experienced occupational health and safety professionals, applying theory to real-world challenges. The final year also includes completion of a substantial research project, often in collaboration with the placement host organisation, with some students presenting their findings at national health and safety conferences. Throughout the degree, guest lecturers from industry and professional bodies, including the Health and Safety Authority, Environmental Protection Agency, and the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health, provide insight into current practice, ensuring students are fully prepared to enter the workforce as competent and highly employable OHSM professionals.
