COURSE CURRICULUM
The BSc in Mathematical Science at the University of Galway is a flexible honours program designed to allow students to shape their studies according to their interests and career goals. In the first year, students develop a broad foundation in mathematics, applied mathematics, probability, statistics, and programming, alongside an introductory science module in biology, chemistry, or physics, complemented by the Mathematical Science Workshop Series. The second year builds on this foundation, covering core topics such as linear algebra, discrete mathematics, differential forms, complex analysis, probability, statistical inference, mechanics, and mathematical methods, while also allowing students to choose up to one-third of their curriculum from elective options within or beyond the School of Mathematics, subject to prerequisites. This structure provides students with both depth and breadth, preparing them to make informed decisions about specialisation in later years. In the third and fourth years, students focus on specialised modules tailored to their chosen areas, such as pure mathematics, applied mathematics, or statistics, while also having opportunities to integrate knowledge from bioinformatics, physics, chemistry, or biology. Third-year students may apply to study abroad for one semester, gaining international experience and exposure to diverse mathematical perspectives. The capstone of the degree is a final-year project, undertaken under the guidance of a faculty member, where students develop advanced research skills, mathematical writing, and presentation abilities. Through this combination of broad foundational knowledge, elective exploration, and focused specialisation, graduates of the BSc in Mathematical Science acquire strong analytical, problem-solving, and quantitative skills, preparing them for careers in industry, finance, technology, research, or further postgraduate study. The program’s emphasis on flexibility, practical application, and research-led learning ensures that students can pursue their unique interests while gaining the rigorous mathematical training required to address complex challenges across a wide range of disciplines.
