COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc (Hons) in Marine Science at the University of Galway is a four-year degree designed for students fascinated by the oceans and the life they support. The program provides a broad introduction to marine environments, combining core subjects such as marine biology, earth science, chemistry, physics, mathematics, statistics, oceanography, botany, geology, and microbiology. In Year One, students build a strong scientific foundation, studying biology, chemistry, physics, and choosing a module in mathematics, applied mathematics, mathematical studies, or computer science. Year Two introduces more specialised topics, including aquatic plant science, oceanography, microbes and the environment, invertebrate biology, and vertebrate zoology, alongside elective modules that allow students to begin exploring their preferred areas of study. In Year Three, students deepen their understanding of marine ecosystems with modules on plant resources and ecosystems, ocean dynamics, aquatic geochemistry, microbial genomics, marine habitats, and concepts in population and community ecology, while gaining practical experience in geographic information systems and biostatistics. Year Four focuses on research, integration, and independent study, with a major research project, field skills training, and a marine science essay and presentation. Students can also select from electives such as current topics in algal research, primary productivity and global change, ocean and marine politics, marine and coastal ecology, and biostatistics for natural sciences, enabling them to tailor their final year to their interests. The program emphasises practical and personal skill development, preparing graduates to enter careers in marine research, environmental management, conservation, policy, or continue with postgraduate study.
