COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc in Geography and Geosystems at the University of Galway is a four-year program designed to give students a deep understanding of the Earth’s physical systems, human-environment interactions, and the impacts of environmental and societal change. In Year 1, students establish foundational knowledge across mathematics, biology, chemistry or physics, and both physical and human geography, alongside practical skills in geographic observation and research. Year 2 builds on this foundation with modules in biogeography, coastal and earth surface processes, environmental legislation, statistics, and optional subjects such as oceanography, palaeoclimatology, and plant science, providing a strong grounding in the analytical and scientific methods essential for environmental research. In Year 3, students focus on applied skills including GIS, research project design, sustainability, and professional development, while also choosing from work placement, research placement, or international placement opportunities, and electives covering economic geography, media studies, environmental law, and rural policy. Year 4 emphasizes advanced research and independent learning, with students completing a substantial dissertation, advanced GIS training, and applied field hydrology, alongside optional modules in coastal dynamics, palaeontology, oceanography, environmental ethics, resource economics, and socio-environmental studies. Throughout the program, field-based learning, data analysis, and interdisciplinary research ensure students gain both theoretical knowledge and practical experience. Graduates are equipped to tackle complex environmental challenges, contribute to evidence-based decision-making, and pursue careers in environmental consultancy, government, research, conservation, and policy, as well as opportunities for further postgraduate study in related disciplines.
