COURSE CURRICULUM

The BSc in Financial Mathematics and Economics (BSc FME) at the University of Galway is a four-year program designed to develop expertise in quantitative subjects, with a focus on financial economics, actuarial mathematics, and statistics. The degree combines mathematics, economics, statistics, applied mathematics, accounting, business finance, and computer science to prepare students for analytical and problem-solving roles in finance, actuarial work, and economic analysis. In the first year, students build foundational skills in mathematics, probability, statistics, finance, accounting, economics, and computer science, alongside developing core skills for economics, providing a broad base for subsequent specialisation. In the second year, students expand their quantitative and analytical knowledge through modules such as differential forms, discrete mathematics, linear algebra, complex analysis, programming for science and finance, and statistical inference, while continuing studies in micro- and macroeconomics and financial economics. The third year offers advanced courses in actuarial mathematics, applied regression, economic modelling, money and banking, business finance, and public policy, alongside higher-level mathematics modules including metric spaces, groups, nonlinear systems, and topology. Students may also undertake a merit-based work placement to gain practical experience. The fourth year focuses on integration and specialisation, with modules in life contingencies, pricing and reserving, derivatives and risk management, numerical analysis, measure theory, differential equations with financial derivatives, statistical modelling, networks, and a final year project in mathematics or economics. The program equips graduates with a strong theoretical foundation, applied skills, and practical experience, ensuring they are well-prepared for careers in financial services, actuarial practice, economic research, data analytics, and related fields, or for further postgraduate study. The carefully structured curriculum provides a balance of theory, quantitative methods, and real-world applications, allowing students to develop the expertise and versatility demanded in today’s dynamic financial and economic environment.
