COURSE CURRICULUM
The Bachelor of Science in Earth and Ocean Sciences at the University of Galway is a unique program in Ireland, built on the interconnected disciplines of Geology and Oceanography, offering students an unparalleled perspective on our planet. Geology explores the Earth as a dynamic system, from its origins to its 4.6 billion-year history, examining structure, composition, and large-scale environmental changes over time. Students study areas such as palaeontology, hydrogeology, geophysics, mineralogy, sedimentology, and surface processes, gaining insight into the formation and sustainable management of natural resources including metals, minerals, water, and energy. Oceanography complements this by focusing on the physical, biological, and chemical aspects of the oceans, equipping students to assess environmental impacts, climate change, and natural or human-made hazards in marine and coastal systems. Ireland’s extensive maritime territory provides a unique living laboratory, from deep-sea canyons to nutrient-rich ecosystems that regulate ocean health. In the first year, students develop a foundation in Earth and ocean sciences, alongside core subjects including biology, chemistry, and physics. Year two introduces ocean sciences, field skills, earth surface processes, and complementary life sciences such as zoology and botany, with scientific writing integrated throughout. In year three, students advance into geological mapping, sedimentology, petrology, palaeontology, hydrology, remote sensing, and physical oceanography, enhanced by a residential field trip to apply theory in practice. The final year focuses on specialization and research, with an advanced project, oceanographic fieldwork aboard a research vessel, and modules in global change, hydrogeology, earth observation, economic geology, and sedimentary basins. Throughout the program, students develop critical thinking, analytical skills, and practical experience, preparing them for careers in environmental consultancy, resource management, climate and marine research, and policy roles, or for further postgraduate study. By integrating theory, fieldwork, and research-led learning, the EOS degree empowers graduates to understand the past, interpret the present, and anticipate the future of our dynamic planet.
